Dr. Borys completed her doctorate in clinical psychology at UCLA in 1988.

While in graduate school, she served as one of the group psychotherapists

and overall collaborators for the Post-Therapy Support Program, which

provided treatment to patients previously sexually abused by a therapist.

Along with colleagues in that program, she published multiple papers on

the impacts of both the prior experience and the group treatment process for those patients. Her dissertation, which was published (1989) in an APA peer-reviewed journal and has been widely cited in the field, involved a large scale, random selection, national survey of psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers responding anonymously regarding their beliefs and practices with regard to both sexual and a variety of non-sexual therapy boundary violations. She went on to obtain training in civil forensic psychology evaluation of individuals experiencing any form of boundary violation in a fiduciary relationship and is a Fellow in Forensic Psychology through the American Board of Psychological Specialties.

 

In the late 1990’s, she and other colleagues conducted a survey study (presented at a convention of the American Psychological Association) of subsequent therapists of patients who had boundaries violated previously, obtaining those therapists’ perspective on the impacts the prior violations had on their Patients.

Dr. Borys has been licensed as a psychologist by the state of California since 1990, and has maintained a private practice in the Los Angeles area since then. She has treated and, in the separate, forensic part of her practice, evaluated, large numbers of individuals who have experienced boundary violations in healthcare and other fiduciary relationships.

She is regularly retained as an expert witness in this arena, and has continued to publish and present workshops on this area. She has been a member of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association’s Ethics

Committee since 1990.
